I just drove through Manalapan for the first time last weekend and commented that it sounded like the name of an anxiety medication. My parents moved to the Equestra (which sounds like the pharmaceutical company that makes Manalapan) development in Farmingdale. Growing up in North Jersey, Central Jersey is a mystery to me.
Both those things are true, but Manalapan predates anxiety medications by a considerable period. Not to defend the place - it's just another bedroom community. But it's not such a bad place to live I hear. A friend told me it won some award a few years back as a 'best place to live', but magazines give those things out like candy.
This area is unique geologically because it's where the granite boulders and red clay of North Jersey gives way to the yellow sand of south Jersey. That makes it perfect soil for raising (and racing) Horses.
Manalapan is a little more crowded and doesn't have much in the way of horse farms. But a 5 minute drive in any direction puts you in the heart of NJ Horse country - if it's what you're into.

NJ Used to be the Garden State, but has become the Garden Apartment State.
